Media representatives learned about the results of ENPARD’s rural development project in Kazbegi municipality

On 27th of September, the media representatives in Georgia visited Kazbegi to learn about the results of ENPARD's rural development project in the municipality.

The Kazbegi Project Manager, Salome Bakashvili introduced the project and presented the results and achievements of the two-year activities.

The project introduces the European rural development model - LEADER approach in the Kazbegi municipality and contributes to the reduction of poverty and promotes participatory mechanisms in local decision-making processes. The individual business initiatives supported by small grants became positive models to follow, brought innovations to remote areas and improved the quality of life of its residents.

At the first stage of the project, PIN conducted an active information campaign with the communities of Kazbegi municipality, helped establish the Local Action Group (LAG) and drafted the Strategy of Local Development along with its Action Plan. Next, following the priorities defined by the Local Development Strategy, PIN announced grant contests, in the scope of which the EU funding was approved for 63 development initiatives, including: 7 initiatives from agricultural sector, 33 from tourism and non-agricultural businesses, 12 from public infrastructure, and 11 initiatives from education, sport and culture sectors.

Within the media tour, the journalists visited several EU supported business initiatives in Kazbegi municipality:

A visit took place in a Café "Sweet Corner" situated in the centre of Stepantsminda. With the support of the EU, the Café was equipped and an ice-cream parlour was built. At present, the Café serves visitors and tourists, but also local residents, in particular children. The Café functions seasonally, mostly from May to October and employees 4 persons.

The journalists also visited EU-funded Kindergarten located in Kazbegi's village Arsha. For many years, the kindergarten amenities and services were not organised, and the children could not enjoy their play yard. With the support of the ENPARD project, the kindergarten was equipped with needed infrastructure and with a brand new playground.

The media also visited another important business initiative in the village Arsha - Slaughterhouse "Kazbeguri Ltd." Within this initiative a slaughterhouse will open in Arsha in the end of this year, equipped with HACCP and Food Safety Standards. This will be the first opportunity for local meat producers of legal business producing in Kazbegi. The slaughterhouse will serve beef, lamb and pork producers. It will provide slaughtering service and also will buy livestock from local producers. "Kazbeguri" LTD will also deliver meat to local restaurants, hotels and guest houses, stores. This initiative supports the increase in agricultural productivity and efficiency. "Kazbeguri" employees 8 persons.

A visit also took place in a Guesthouse "Sioni" supported by the EU in the village Sioni of Kazbegi municipality. The guesthouse provides affordable services to visitors and tourists of Kazbegi region. With this initiative, the EU helps the development of hotel business beyond Stepantsminda to surrounding villages and increases the tourism potential there. The guesthouse employees 7 persons.

The EU is supporting rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD Programme. Implemented since 2013 with a total budget of EUR 102 million, the main goal of ENPARD is to reduce rural poverty. More information on ENPARD is available at: www.enpard.ge
